Stage PlaysSome of the most evocative and controversial stage plays to come out of Zimbabwe are now selling on dvd/vhs among them Super Patriots and Morons, Pregnant with Emotion, Update and Muramu. Super Patriots and Morons In the play the characters struggle to get their voices heard…whether it is the voice of the youths, women, the elderly or just ordinary citizens. The play explores questions: When will the citizens take personal action to bring about change in their society? How can citizens make government accountable to the people? How should individuals deal with political and economic points of view that differ from their own? The script was inspired by the coverage of the relevant stories in the news media and the viewpoint of civic bodies including public debate. In a way the play is a comedy of errors where people in an imaginary country, ruled by an out-of-touch dictator, laugh at their own social, political and economic blundering. But the iron-fisted ruler sees his opponents as enemies that must be stopped. The play had been staged in Zimbabwe before without raising the ire of government but was banned during the 2004 Harare International Festival of the Arts. Rooftop Promotions is not only challenging the ban but the whole constitutionality of the Act invoked to stop the play. Written by: Raisedon Baya and Leonard Matsa. Directed by: Calle Kjellgren. Produced by: Daves Guzha. Cast: Daves Guzha; Walter Muparutsa; Chirikure Chirikure; Mandhla Moyo and Joyce Mpofu. Pregnant with Emotion The play is a realistic reflection of the political environment in Zimbabwe and draws mainly on current events and emotions. But the play’s poetic crafting and spiritual characteristic separates it clearly from Super Patriots and Morons that tackles purely the political elements in the broader socio-political context. Pregnant with Emotion is a story of a woman who is pregnant for 13 months. The baby, who speaks through the woman, is refusing to be born until the country’s socio-political problems are solved. Evocative poetry by the celebrated poet Chirikure Chirikure reflects the obtaining socio-political environment. But when blended with the wailing mbira, by the accomplished female instrumentalist, Chiwoniso Maraire, the fusion symbolizes the agony of a nation under siege. Overall the play is a balanced and fair criticism of a nation bedeviled with festering problems. In Zimbabwe the play has been crafted to stimulate public debate and engage civil society in open debate on the problems saddling the nation. The play has left the critical Zimbabwe private press wondering how the production had escaped government censure to this day. Other observers believe the government was becoming more tolerant to criticism and had allowed the play to run. Written by: Edgar Langeveldt and Raisedon Baya. Produced by: Daves Guzha. Cast: Chiwoniso Maraire; Joyce Mpofu; Chirikure Chirikure; Mandla Moyo; Walter Muparutsa and Daves Guzha.
Update The comedy looks at Zimbabwe and its challenges. It openly nourishes with happenings around the world. Edgar has all issues moulded into a political as well as a satirical stand up comedy. he surely makes you see bad situations in a much lighter way. It makes you laugh your lungs out. Strange Bedfellows Racial tension is dealt with extensively in the play. During rehearsals two characters (One Black and the other White) get emotional and ignore the script as they exchange bitter words on the racial tension in the country, Zimbabwe. The two characters get the real test during a scene in which they are supposed to kiss.
